Bowen Therapy

The Bowen Technique is a gentle, subtle and relaxing hands on treatment

Who can it  help?

The Bowen Technique is suitable for adults and children, including newborn babies and the elderly.

What is it?

The practitioner uses thumbs or fingers to make a series of precise, rolling type moves over muscle. During the treatment there are short breaks where the patient is left resting to allow their body to respond to the gentle moves that have been performed. This rest period is an important part of the treatment and gives the body time to make the subtle and fine adjustments, which help to re-balance, relieve tension and reduce pain. It is these features which make the Bowen Technique unique.

What does the treatment involve?

An appointment wil take approximately 45 minutes and most of the work can be performed through light clothing (or directly on the skin). Four to five treatments at a weekly intervals are often sufficient to achieve lasting relief, although further treatment may be required. To receive maximum benefit it is recommended that other physical therapies are not mixed with Bowen Technique for example reflexology, massage, physiotherapy.

What does it treat?

The Bowen Technique aims to balance the whole person, not just the symptoms. Common presentations include back and neck pain, knee problems, sport injuries, RSI, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and respiratory problems, to name but a few. Practically any problem can potentially be addressed and some people use the Bowen Technique as a means for stress management and health maintenance, seeing their therapist regularly 2-4 times a year.

Bowen Therapy.......Scar Tissue Treatment

Who is this for?

It is for anybody who has had any scarring due to surgical treatment/operations – even from decades ago. It can be extremely effective for long or short term scarring such as:

     Caesarian section scars

     Hysterectomy scars

     Spinal surgery scars

     Trauma scars

     Head wound scars

     Burn scars

     Mastectomy scars etc…

This treatment can be done as a separate session which lasts about 15-20 minutes and can be done on everyone and at all ages, from small children to elderly people.

Later at home after the treatment I felt some tingling and warmth in both scars...[2 scars on her abdomen, a cesarian and an appendix scar, also suffering with Diverticulosis for many years.]...this was absolutely fantastic. The best thing is that the Diverticulosis has settled down and I have had no reaction since. I am so happy and the pain is totally gone.

I had scar tissue treatment on my hip/knee replacement scars, with Enrica. I was really pleased with the results as it loosened those areas around around which I was experiencing tightness. I was also able to walk much better. Thank you, N D.

Today I had a treatment of MSTR (McLoughlin Scar Tissue Release) from Enrica. I had heard great things of this technique and had seen before and after treatment photos of scars, so it was very interesting to be on the receiving end.

I’m a body worker/holistic therapist myself so was very curious to see how Enrica could positively influence a 25 year old abdominal surgery scar. The surgery was a bladder repair which left an ugly slash across my lower abdomen and an overhang from where it was badly stitched.

The technique is very gentle and deeply relaxing. I could feel released energy shooting down my left leg like cold water. Part of the scar felt a little tender even to the lightest touch - something I had never noticed before - and I believe it to be this remarkable technique (and this remarkable lady!) bringing out the remains of this trauma to the body.

But as Enrica worked on the tissues around the scar - oh so gently - any tenderness and tension melted away.

The scar itself now looks shorter, paler and more shallow, after one short session! I’ve had lower back pain and a very tight right side piriformis muscle for years, which I think could be attributed to the scarring, both internal and external. I fully expect these to improve over time as Enrica continues to work on reducing the scar trauma.

Very impressed! Thank-you Enrica. X

Bowen can be used to address symptoms of the reproductive and neurological systems in both men and women.  If you are suffering from any hormonal issues and you would like to talk about trying the Bowen Technique, just give me a call

Where did it originate?

Thomas Ambrose Bowen of Geelong, Australia dveloped his own "technique" and had a thriving practise untl he died in the 1980's. His approach is now known throughout the world.

The Guardian (August 2001) reports that the Bowen Technique has a surprisingly high success rate in the treatment of infertility. Trials in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, using the Bowen Technique on infertile couples, have met with remarkable success and Bowen specialists worldwide report on the fast and effective results of this technique in treating infertility. The Bowen Technique consists of a series of gentle moves over specific areas of muscles, tendons and other soft tissue. The location of these soft tissue moves causes the body to make rapid and very often astounding changes, as it is stimulated to remove physical and/or emotional blockages, which may have been present for years. Bowen can be used to treat infertility by:

Inducing deep muscular relaxation - mental and emotional stress can cause muscles to tighten and restrict the natural blood-flow, lymphatic drainage and nerve supply of the body, all of which can affect fertility. Relaxation of muscles aids the natural flow of processes necessary for ovulation, conception and a healthy pregnancy

Applying a particular system of moves that addresses the endocrine (hormonal) system and pelvic area. These moves can have a positive effect on both male and female reproductive systems, working on functional problems such as low sperm count, infrequent ovulation, ovarian cysts and endometriosis as well as other conditions leading to infertility.

Relaxing the mind - fertility problems are not always physical and both the autonomic nervous and endocrine systems are influenced by the mind. As the Bowen technique is powerful in relaxing the mind, it enhances confidence and positive thinking which, in turn, have a beneficial effect on the health of the physical body.

Bowen and IVF

Bowen works wonderfully with couples using assisted conception techniques, such as IVF. Such techniques can be physically, mentally and emotionally stressful. However, the Bowen's gentle moves can alleviate such effects by relaxing and rebalancing the body and mind, resulting in an increase in physical, emotional and psychological health and well-being. The effect of Bowen on the musculoskeletal structure, blood-flow, nerve supply and autonomic and endocrine (hormonal) systems can prepare the body for successful IVF treatment and a healthy pregnancy.

Bowen during pregnancy

The Bowen Technique plays an important role in the healthcare of women during pregnancy. The technique can be performed in its entirety with the female sitting down or lying on her side and, given the effective changes that occur during and after a Bowen treatment, it is an integral part of the process for mothers-to-be.

The spine and pelvis of an expectant mother are particularly vulnerable due to the stresses of carrying an unborn child and many problems arising during pregnancy may be directly related to the health of the spine. The Bowen works by:

Relaxing the muscles, thereby increasing blood-flow, lymphatic drainage and nerve supply. This enables the body to restore and maintain optimal functioning of its natural processes during pregnancy and increases flexibility of the musculoskeletal system so that the expectant mother's body can more easily make the changes necessary for healthy development of the foetus.

Rebalancing the musculoskeletal system. Instability of the pelvis, especially during the latter stages of pregnancy, can cause backache to intensify and occur more frequently as the baby gets heavier. A system of Bowen moves involving the back, pelvic and sacral areas cause the body to rebalance the musculoskeletal system, thereby quickly and effectively alleviating pain and discomfort.

Rebalancing and energizing the body as a whole. As aches and pains are gently and easily relieved with Bowen, it can be used to treat all common pregnancy problems, including backache, sciatica, neck tension, aching legs, swollen ankles and hands, headaches, fatigue, nausea, heartburn, constipation, haemorroids, decreased energy levels. In addition, it is an extremely relaxing treatment for the expectant mother.

Most Bowen procedures can be performed on an expectant mother almost up until labour commences as well as being used successfully for inducing labour in overdue pregnancies, should the female wish.

Bowen and birth

The birth itself may leave the mother with lower back and pelvic pain and, even after the most straightforward of births, the body of the female needs to readjust and rebalance. Certain Bowen moves can be performed within a few hours of the birth to alleviate pain or discomfort and relax and rebalance the body.

Subsequent to the birth and whilst the mother is nursing, feeding and caring for the baby, the Bowen plays a significant role in adjusting the body and assisting in its returning to its natural state. Any old or new aches and pains can be gently and quickly relieved and the treatment is extremely relaxing for the mother.

Bowen and the child

The birth is one of the most traumatic processes a child will go through. The child is able to have Bowen within a day or so after the birth. As it is so gentle, the child is barely aware of being treated.

Bowen therapy can help treat many infant disorders, including:

     Colic

     Feeding problems e.g. reflux

     Unsettled and distressed behavior

     Respiratory problems e.g. asthma

     Hiccups

Bowen therapy has proven to work wonderfully with children of any age for numerous disorders, including the relaxing and calming of hyperactive children.

I feel I would like to pass on to people (like myself) who suffer from arthritis, my experience during the past year or so. Help and relief from very painful joints and muscles has been given to me by a lovely person (Enrica) who practices the Bowen Technique. This is a non-invasive gentle manipulation around the inflamed and tender areas in the body. The results of just a 20 minute session are so beneficial (especially with a painful shoulder - awaiting surgery)!!! My mobility is improved, pain levels are less and a feeling of being very relaxed follows each treatment.

Just to say thank you for the Bowen treatment I had recently that has enabled me to cancel the operation I was due to have in September. As you know, my GP recommended that I go to a back clinic who tried manipulation and acupuncture, neither of which was successful.  I was then referred to a consultant who advised that I would need an operation to remove a section of vertebrae in order to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve that had become trapped.  With this in mind, we started Bowen treatment and after 4 treatments I felt so much better - the cramping sensation and spasms eased considerably and I could walk normally again.

I am extremely grateful to you and to Bowen treatment - both of which I shall be recommending.

Alison H.

When I was around 6 months pregnant I developed sciatica which made everyday tasks hard to cope with. I was recommended to try the Bowen technique with Enrica. After the 1st session I noticed a significant difference and after the 3rd session it was almost completly gone. I would definately recommend Enricas Bowen technique as it worked for me.

I was a little sceptical before trying out the Bowen technique for my lower backpain, wondering how such small and gentle movements could possibly help. But, even after a couple of sessions I started to notice a difference and by the end of my treatment I felt free from pain. So the proof is in the pudding!
